Trembling on the Brink

He and She are on the path from here to there
Mired down in the prison irons of their past.
He is afraid his "mother" will abandon him once again.
She is afraid her "father" will smoother her individuality.

He is intense in his reaching out to grasp life.
She is silent in her turning in to protect life.
They are mirrors of each other's souls
Reflecting their troubled selves in stark relief.

They taste of passion in their sexual embrace
Suggesting the promise of the larger life beyond
As they lie trembling on the brink of ecstasy
That lies just down the road and to the left.

Will he ever let go of his Mother?
Will she ever let go of her Father?
And fall into the presence of the moment.
No, they would rather wallow in their past.
