Andrew Lloyd Webber's immensely popular musical was a song poem to The Intuitive Self. Scattered throughout the libretto, phrases grabbed me as I listened to the music. Of all the songs, "The Music of the Night" was most replete with hints of The Intuitive Self: Added emphasis appears in red, and my reactions are enclosed in a box: (Note 92)
I have brought you to
the seat of sweet music's throne . . .
to this kingdom where
all must pay homage to music . . .
music . . . .
Descending into the underworld of the higher unconscious, I tasted God's song. Once I had savored the least sweetness of that music, my life would never be the same. I had to "pay homage" to that music. |
You have come here,
for one purpose, and one alone . . .
Since the moment
I first heard you sing,
I have needed you with me,
to serve me, to sing,
for my music . . . my music . . .
From the first epiphany, there was no question but that the sole purpose of existence was serving The Intuitive Self. But many years of trial and tribulation would pass before the full force of that awareness permeated my consciousness. |
Night time sharpens,
heightens each sensation . . .
Darkness stirs
and wakes imagination . . .
Silently the senses
abandon their defenses . . .
As my imagination awoke from illusion wrought by the bright light of day, an urge to abandon to the flow of inner being took hold never again to disappear. |
Slowly, gently
night unfurls its splendor . . .
Grasp it, sense it -
tremulous and tender . . .
Turn your face away
from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away
from cold, unfeeling light -
and listen to
the music of the night . . .
The ways of the garish day paled when confronted with the promise of God splendor revealed in night shadows. The rhythmic flow of inner being trembled on the brink as my step responded to the "music of the night" pealing from the loins of The Intuitive Self. |
Close your eyes
and surrender
to your darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts
of the life you knew before!
Close your eyes,
let your spirit start to soar!
And you'll live
as you've never lived before . . .
Clearing the mind of fears and desires and their associated chatter and stress allowed me to surrender if only for moments to the grace of being. My spirit began to soar as it never had before. |
Softly, deftly,
music shall surround you . . .
Feel it, hear it,
closing in around you . . .
Open up your mind,
let your fantasies unwind,
in this darkness
which you know
you cannot fight -
the darkness
of the music of the night . . .
Fantasies of union and reconciliation with the divine other hidden in the recesses of my being assumed greater and greater presence as music of The Intuitive Self engulfed me. |
Let your mind
start a journey
through a strange, new world!
Leave all your thoughts
of the world you knew before!
Let your soul
take you where you long to be!
Only then can you belong to me . . .
Leaving all rehashing of the past and fantasies of the future behind, my soul was freed to take me where I longed to be: reunion with my true Self. As the sages had prophesied, "That Art thou." |
Floating, falling,
sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me,
savor each sensation!
Let the dream begin,
let your darker side give in
to the power
of the music that I write -
the power
of the music of the night . . .
When fully embraced, the dark destruction of Kali's power turned into an intoxicating elixir dripping from her full lips. A mystery of the universe was revealed: destruction was resurrection. |
You alone
can make my song take flight -
help me make
the music of the night . . .
In my unique way, I was the only one that could sing the song of The Intuitive Self residing in my core. Each other could express theirs, but only I could express mine. Joseph Campbell was right "follow your bliss." Was there any wonder tears flowed freely down my cheeks each time I heard this song! |
